I started digging sand using a pick axe and a shovel, then manufacturing paving at my parents home in Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxon. This was in 1958. Dad became so angry, I mean incandescent, he told me in no uncertain terms “I will smash every ****slab with this sledge hammer” Dad was certain I was throwing away a very promising engineering career. I had already passed ONC and HNC in mechanical engineering, next university,Scientific Officer and great civil service pension. It took Mum and Dad some time to realise I was not going to give up my dream of developing a small business, and over time they gave me their full support. Looking back over the years they both had a very good reason for their behaviour.
