The team is based in Weston Rhyn, Shropshire - approximately 4.5 miles from Oswestry in England and 1.5 miles from Chirk in Wales. The village sits on the main Shrewsbury to Chester railway, surrounded by beautiful border countryside and notable sites such as Chirk Castle, Chirk Aqueduct, Ty Mawr Country Park and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

History of Weston Rhyn AFC

Established in 2023, The previous club folded early 2015 and then there was no club for nearly 10 years until they reformed in the summer of 2023, joining the Salop Leisure Divison. Currently sitting mid-table at 8th out of 16 teams. They have only lost 1 game in their last 6 and are in the quarter-final of the division 1 league cup. Weston Rhyn have won the Graham Edwards 4 times and were the very first winners of the tournament back in the 70’s. The club was founded back in 1882 under the name ‘Quinta Swifts’ where the football in the village was played at the Quinta, they then moved to Weston Rhyn Recreation Ground in 1930 and renamed the club Weston Rhyn Colts. They have won the Shropshire challenge cup 5 times, the last triumph being back in 2014. The reformed club won their first piece of silverware after winning the Derek Stokes Memorial Trophy in May 2024.

Weston Rhyn Hopes For The Future

We spoke to Lew Alderson who told us about Westn Rhyn's goals for this season and beyond....

Goals before the season started were to finish mid-table and go on a cup run, currently we are fulfilling those goals. Our goals from this season onwards will be for a top-five finish in the league next season and silverware in the cup. We will also co-tune our off-field developments as we look to improve the infrastructure at the ground to make Weston Rhyn an attractive place to play football for the local talent. We’ll be looking to add a spectator barrier around the pitch to preserve it for match days and start serving food on a match day for our spectators.

Our History

Gardenstone was opened in 1958 by Rogers of Faringdon in the Cotswolds, making reconstituted stone products (concrete) and a variety of high-quality garden edgings and decorative landscaping which have become well-renowned over the decades.  In 2018 Rogers made the decision to cease production and source products from a number of UK based suppliers including Westminster Stone.  

The company was bought by the Westminster Stone Group in 2019 who specialise in the manufacture and distribution of high-quality handmade paving slabs and flooring products, alongside a thriving natural stone and porcelain compendium. This acquisition has secured the Gardenstone brand for the next 60 years and beyond!

The ‘Click & Collect’ service enables you to order online, and to collect from our Shropshire Distribution Centre, near Ellesmere (at SY12 9EL). We’re within a half-hour drive of Shrewsbury, and Chester, and within 15 minutes of Oswestry and Wrexham. We’re located on the B5069, just 5 miles off the A5 / A483 trunk road at Chirk.
